3.73 Holidays

A. Purpose

To establish standards for observed holidays.

B. Policy

The college observes various holidays throughout the year. All employees, except those engaged in continuous operations, will be excused from work.

C. Procedures

Generally, the college observes 13 holidays. For the purpose of these procedures, the term “holiday” will apply to the 13 holidays listed below as well as additional days off designated by the chancellor (i.e. Monday of fall break, the day before Thanksgiving, winter break, etc.). All holidays are subject to change by the chancellor.

These procedures do not apply to instances when the college is closed due to severe weather or other emergency situations.

The 13 holidays observed by the college include:

New Year’s Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Presidents Day
Friday of Spring Break
Memorial Day
Juneteenth National Independence Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
The day after Thanksgiving
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day
New Year’s Eve

Holidays falling on a Saturday will be observed on the preceding Friday. Holidays falling on a Sunday will be observed on the following Monday.

Full-time employees are paid for a holiday only if they worked or had an approved paid leave (i.e., vacation or sick) on their regularly scheduled workday prior to the holiday. An employee whose employment is terminated before a college closure will not be paid for the college closure.

A staff employee submitting their resignation in December must work five (5) working days in January to receive the college closure pay. The exception to this rule is PSRS/PEERS eligible retirees retiring on the last day of December and/or faculty members who have fully completed their teaching responsibilities with final grades submitted before leaving the college at the end of the fall semester.

Depending on when a holiday occurs, full-time employees working compressed schedules may be required to either adjust their work schedule for the week containing a holiday or holidays, and/or use accrued leave to ensure the total of hours worked, holiday hours, and leave hours equals 40 hours. If a holiday or holidays occur on one or more of the employee’s regularly scheduled workdays, eight (8) holiday hours will be applied to the time off for each day of the holiday. Employees will be required to either use leave time or work additional hours during the week to ensure that total hours (hours worked plus holiday hours and leave hours) equal 40 for the week. If a holiday or holidays occur on days when the full-time employee is typically not scheduled to work, the employee should reduce their total hours worked in the week to adjust for the holiday(s). Employees must coordinate and have approvals for changes in their work schedules with their supervisors.
