5.09 – Academic Standing
A. Purpose
To establish criteria to assign OTC students an academic standing at the end of each semester based on their institutional grade point average (GPA) and to outline the effects of the determined academic standing.
B. Policy
Any student who has completed at least one course for college credit at OTC will be assigned an academic standing at the end of that semester.
C. Procedures
Academic standing procedures for the college are maintained by the Office of the Registrar.
Upon receipt of final grades for a semester, the Registrar’s office will calculate a student’s institutional GPA for any student who has at least one (1) attempted credit hour with a final grade.
Students whose institutional GPA is 2.0 and above are considered in good standing.
Students whose institutional GPA falls below 2.0 are placed on academic probation.
Students placed on academic probation may not be allowed to go into overload status.
D. Definitions
Cumulative Grade Point Average is the combined grade point average (GPA) of all course work and credits completed at all institutions of higher education.
Institutional Grade Point Average is the grade point average (GPA) of all course work and credits completed at OTC for college credit.
Overload Status is enrollment in credit hours that surpasses the maximum number of credit hours allowed each semester.
Semester is one of three periods of instruction into which an academic year is divided: fall, spring and summer.
Term is a designated period of academic instruction within a semester. Each semester may contain multiple terms of varying lengths.

This policy is maintained under the authority of the vice chancellor of student affairs.
